New airline told to clip its wings — for now

Airtime Airlines, which is reported to be planning a service between Durban and Johannesburg to start on Friday, has been warned not to do so until it has got its permits in order.

The Department of Transport has also warned the public not to buy tickets to fly with it.

The department on Wednesday said: “The Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC) has today [Wednesday] warned the public against the illegally planned air operations of the emerging airline called ‘Airtime Airlines’, which is reportedly due to take to the skies this Friday.

“This comes amid reported marketing and sale of flight tickets by this airline for travel between the Durban and the OR Tambo International Airports. The council has warned members of the public to be wary of such transactions, since ‘Airtime Airlines’ does not hold a domestic licence to carry out such operations.”

The licensing council has also called upon the airline to follow legislative requirements before engaging in any air operations, including the sale of air tickets.

Meanwhile, the council is to institute an investigation into the affairs of this airline to ensure that there is no transgression of the aviation legislation. — I-Net Bridge
