ANC goes online with election campaign

The African National Congress (ANC) campaign trail can now be followed online with the party posting video clips and updates on an interactive website, the party said on Thursday.

Visitors to www.myanc.org are greeted by a snapshot of grinning party president Jacob Zuma, the same one emblazoned on T-shirts and other election paraphernalia.

Links to video clips of Zuma on the campaign trail posted on YouTube, a discussion forum and links to downloads of the party’s manifesto all form part of the online experience.

”This will allow voters who aren’t able to attend election events to follow the campaign and the main issues affecting South Africans,” said party spokesperson Steyn Speed in a statement.

”The most recent video clip covers ANC president Jacob Zuma’s visit to Musina in Limpopo, where thousands of Zimbabweans are being accommodated amid a cholera outbreak. The news clip documents the difficult conditions under which many people are living, and the efforts of health workers and others to contain the disease.”

Different studies on South Africa’s internet penetration put the number of internet users at between 4,5-million and six million, or about 10% of the population.

More than 21,6-million South Africans are registered to vote in the upcoming election. The party’s online campaign is running alongside its ongoing door-to-door work and public forums. — Sapa
