SAA workers go on strike

South African Airways (SAA) workers embarked on a strike on Friday in a dispute over the payment of premiums and labour brokers, the airline said.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) declared a dispute earlier in the week, said SAA spokesperson Robyn Chalmers.

She said a contingency plan had been put in place to minimise disruption to passengers.

”SAA’s operations are unaffected, but some disruptions may occur today [Friday],” she said.

The union is demanding that the payment of retention premiums be extended to all workers and that SAA immediately halt the use of labour brokers.

SAA said it was committed to continued engagement with union leadership to resolve the impasse.

The strike was likely to affect the OR Tambo and the Cape Town International airports. — Sapa
