ACT Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay is in a critical but stable condition in a Durban hospital after being hit by a vehicle over the weekend, the team said on Monday.
The Australian Super 14 team, currently on tour in South Africa, said the accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when Mackay was struck by a security vehicle while crossing a road.
Mackay sustained a cervical spinal fracture and dislocation, a compound fracture to his left leg, and multiple facial fractures and lacerations, the Brumbies said on their website.
The forward underwent surgery and will remain in traction in a medically-induced coma for the next 48 hours as he undergoes further medical treatment, they said.
”Shawn has sustained severe head and leg injuries but has received first-class medical treatment from the time of the accident and will receive ongoing treatment,” team doctor Warren McDonald said in the statement.
”He is in a critical condition but is stable, and we won’t know the full extent of his injuries until he is brought out of the coma in two days’ time. He is receiving round-the-clock intensive care and treatment.”
The Brumbies said Mackay was returning to the hotel when he was struck. They said the accident is being investigated by Durban police. – AFP
