Khumalo pleads not guilty in drunken-driving case

Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs soccer player Doctor Khumalo has pleaded not guilty in the drunken, reckless and negligent driving case against him, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) news reported.

On Monday, the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court heard that Khumalo was unsteady and smelled of alcohol on the day of an accident he was involved in last May.

Khumalo faces charges of drunk and reckless or negligent driving in connection with the accident, which occurred on the N1 highway between the Maraisburg and Soweto offramps.

Earlier this year, the state alleged that Khumalo was driving while at three times over the legal limit at the time of the accident between his BMW and a minibus taxi.

Khumalo allegedly forced the taxi off the road.

The former soccer star, his female passenger and three passengers from the taxi were taken to the Flora Clinic on the West Rand after the accident.

The trial continues on Tuesday. — Sapa
