Union serves Massmart with strike notices

Massmart Holdings has been served with strike notices for protected protest action on Friday, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) said on Wednesday.

The union said in a statement that the protest action would be centred around Massmart’s Makro, Game and Dion stores.

Saccawu said its members were ready to embark on indefinite strikes ”should the company fail to meet union demands after the July 24 protest action”.

Saccawu intended to stage joint protest marches of members employed at Makro, Game and Dion stores in Johannesburg. A memorandum would be delivered to the Game City store in President Street, Johannesburg.

Saccawu members would also march in Cape Town, where a memorandum would be delivered to the Game Grand Central store.

In Bloemfontein archers would deliver a memorandum to the Game Mimmosa Mall store and in Durban a memorandum would be delivered to company representatives at the City Hall.

Saccawu said no marches would be staged in the Eastern Cape since stores were scattered.

Members in the Eastern Cape would, however, gather at the union’s offices for a briefing.

”The union has been and is always willing to enter into discussions aimed at finding an amicable settlement to disputes.

”This, however, depends on whether management is willing to enter into genuine discussions over issues in dispute,” Saccawu said.

The union said the protest action was a sequel to unresolved disputes against companies in the Massmart stable.

There was an unresolved wage dispute with Makro and an unresolved dispute concerning unilateral change to terms and conditions of employment with Game and Dion, Saccawu said. — Sapa
