Chiefs were playing mind games, says Schalkwyk

Kaizer Chiefs were playing mind games when their chairman, Kaizer Motaung, stated on the club’s website that Chiefs were not keen to compete in the Telkom Charity Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg in Saturday.

That was the opinion of former Amakhosi striker and new Orlando Pirates signing Gert Schalkwyk who is hoping to make his Bucs debut against Chiefs in the second Charity Cup semifinal. Mamelodi Sundowns meet Platinum Stars in the first semifinal.

”I know how Chiefs operate and they are playing mind games with us,” said Schalkwyk, who was loaned by Chiefs to Bloemfontein Celtic for the second round of the 2008/09 season.

”I do not believe for a minute that they did not want to compete in the Charity Cup and win it. Chiefs want to win everything on
offer, but we will be ready for them.”

Motaung said on his club’s website that he did not want his side to compete in the Charity Cup because Amakhosi have a tough MTN 8
quarterfinal clash against BidVest Wits at the Orlando Stadium next Tuesday.

But the four teams with the most telephones votes qualify and Chiefs’ fans voted them into the competition.

Schalkwyk, who has recovered from injury, is itching to play against his former club.

”I would love to make my debut against Chiefs,” said the fired-up striker.

”I am fit but it is up to the coach [Ruud Krol] as to who plays. But if I get a chance I will make it count.

”The dream debut for me would be scoring against Chiefs.”

Schalkwyk added that he was not worried about getting booed by Chiefs fans.

”I can handle the boos as I am expecting them,” he said. ”It is part of the game and does not worry me at all.

”I will shut up the Chiefs fans if I get a chance by playing well and going all out to score.” — Sapa
