Fire destroys part of Golden Gate rest camp

A fire has destroyed part of the Basotho Cultural Village rest camp in the Golden Gate National Park in the Free State, a park official said on Tuesday.

Golden Gate park manager Johan Taljaard said a fire started early on Tuesday morning at the rest camp, destroying nine of the camp’s 24 units.

”The cause of the fire is as yet unknown,” Taljaard said in a statement.

The fire apparently started between 2am and 3am.

Taljaard said it was not clear how the fire started and they would have to wait for the results of a forensic investigation.

The Basotho Cultural Village rest camp would be closed until further notice.

Taljaard said other areas of the village, such as the museum, would still be operational.

The Basotho Cultural Village opened in December 2008 and had been a popular attraction for visitors to Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

Taljaard said the rest camp was fully booked for the upcoming holiday on September 24.

SANParks would contact all the affected clients to either arrange alternative accommodation in the park or to reschedule their bookings. — Sapa
