A high-powered delegation led by Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, today visited the families of four learners killed yesterday afternoon in an illegal drag race on Protea North Boulevard in Soweto.
Gauteng education MEC Barbara Creecy and roads and transport MEC Bheki Nkosi, accompanied Mokonyane.
Three of the deceased learners were enrolled at Jules High School in Jeppestown while the other was a learner at Almont High School in Protea North.
According to media reports, a hip-hop singer, popularly known as Jub Jub and his friend allegedly drag-raced in their Mini Coopers on the two-lane street.
The singer allegedly lost control of his car when he swerved to avoid an oncoming car. His Mini apparently ploughed into the four learners who were walking on the pavement, still clad in their school uniform killing them instantly and leaving three seriously injured. The injured have been admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.
”The news of the accident and its nature were received with shock by the provincial government. Persons responsible for these senseless deaths should face the full might of the law,” said a statement from Gauteng Department of Education.
