Two people were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for public violence in Mamelodi East, where police were still trying to calm angry protesters who were stoning cars.
“The violence was unlikely to stop anytime soon because as soon as there’s some stone-throwing, police act and after a while the same thing happens again,” said Pretoria police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso.
He said police would maintain their presence in the township until they were sure there was stability.
Earlier in the day, Maheso described the situation as being “very tense”.
Police fired rubber bullets at protesting residents who were demanding that government deliver on its promises for better service delivery.
The protesters went on rampage on Monday night, blockading roads leading in and out of the township.
This continued through Tuesday as tyres were burned and stones were thrown at passing cars, said Maheso.
Roads affected were Hans Strydom and Hector Peterson.
Maheso said a few houses were also damaged by the stone-throwing. A lot of people had to walk long distances to get taxis to work. — Sapa
