Two charged over assault of one-year-old

Two Mozambican citizens were on Monday charged with attempted murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances for the assault of one-year-old Marzaan Kruger and her minder, Francina Sekhu.

Nelson Maphosa (25) and Geraldt Nyantumbo (28) appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

They were arrested in Alexandra on Saturday.

Baby Kruger and Sekhu were viciously assaulted in the Kruger family home in Robindale, Randburg, on Thursday.

Police said they were still looking for a third suspect believed to be the ringleader of the group.

The case was postponed for further investigation.

The men were remanded to custody.

Meanwhile, Baby Kruger was in a serious but stable condition on Monday morning.

The baby’s father, Bertus Kruger, told Beeld that he was “happy” about the arrests, adding that doctors were “cautiously optimistic” about his daughter’s condition.

The Star reported on Monday that Sekhu was recovering well and was seated on her bed, talking and laughing with relatives when a reporter visited her. — Sapa
