Two in court for Randburg baby assault

Two Mozambican citizens were expected to appear in court on Wednesday for the assault on one-year-old baby Marzaan Kruger and her minder, Francina Sekhu.

Both Kruger and Sekhu were heavily assaulted during a house robbery in the Kruger family home in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Thursday. Kruger was still in a serious but stable condition in the Sandton Medi-clinic, while Sekhu was recovering in the Helen Joseph hospital.

The two men, Nelson Maphosa, 28, and Geraldt Nyantumbo, 25, briefly appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on two charges of attempted murder and one of robbery with aggravated circumstances each on Monday.

The case was postponed to Wednesday.

It was not known whether they would apply for bail.

A third man, suspected to be the ring leader of the group, Chakhoma Machaba, 28, was still on the run after the attack.

Police circulated Machaba’s photo and appealed for anybody with information on him to come forward, but the Star reported that South Africa’s main border post to Mozambique was not notified that police were looking for him. The daily said officials did not have a warrant of arrest for him either.

Machaba reportedly had legal residency status in South Africa. Maphosa and Nyantumbo were arrested in Alexandra township on Saturday. — Sapa
