Zimbabwe national soccer coach quits, joins Stars

Zimbabwe’s national football coach Sunday Chidzambwa has quit and taken up a coaching post with South Africa’s Free State Stars, reports said Tuesday.

“I have coached in this country for 26 years and this is a new challenge for me,” Chidzambwa is quoted as saying by the state-run Herald after signing a two-year deal to replace Gordon Igesund, who has resigned.

Chidzadzwa, who was owed $60 000 in outstanding salaries by the football authorities, will now earn R100 000 ($13 500) a month, the report said.

Chidzambwa, a former national team captain, became the first coach to guide Zimbabwe to qualification for the Africa Cup Nations in 2004.

The former national team captain, was also director of coaching for local football giants Dynamos. – AFP
