War-crimes court to subpoena Naomi Campbell

Supermodel Naomi Campbell will be summoned to testify over a “blood diamond” she was allegedly given by Liberian ex-president Charles Taylor, a war-crimes court announced on Thursday.

Taylor has been on trial since 2008 for his alleged role in the civil war in neighbouring Sierra Leone, accused of arming rebels in return for illegally mined diamonds.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone, sitting the The Hague, ruled that Campbell be subpoenaed to appear before the court to answer claims by actress Mia Farrow that Campbell was given the diamond by Taylor after a dinner hosted by former South African president Nelson Mandela in September 1997.

“What it is going to happen now is just a matter of when it happens,” court spokesperson Peter Andersen told Agence France-Presse. — AFP
