Jo’burg music picks: August 27 2010

Whether it’s jazz or rock you’re after. there are plenty of festivals on the go to satisfy your appetite.

  • The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz takes place from Friday 26 to Saturday 28 August. The annual fest attracts an audience of 20 000, across 7 venues in Johannesburg’s buzzing Newtown Cultural precinct. This years the lien up is a heady mix of top international artists (including Ravi Coltrane, Poncho Sanchez and Lalah Hathaway) and an exciting mix of home-grown talent (Melanie Scholtz, The Kyle Shepherd fineART Quartet). Beyond music, the staging of the Joy of Jazz in the Newtown Precinct has played an integral part in the regeneration of the inner city, having had significant benefits in helping to shape the future of Johannesburg, and contributing to the city’s changing creative and cultural landscape.   • This weekend also plays host of one of Jo’burg’s biggest live music festivals, Jo’burg Burning, which takes place in the Melville area on Firday 27 and Saturday 28 August. This event sees 40 plus bands from around the country performing at five different venues over the two nights of the festival. The festival also provides regular shuttles to transport patrons to all performance areas. The Venues include Roxy Rhythm Bar, Bohemian, Cool Runnings Melville, Jozi G Spot and Back2Basix. Some of the bands in the line-up include Wake to wonder, 340ml, Wrestlerish, Dance You’re on Fire, Tidal Waves, Rambling Bones, The City if the Desert, Alan! Lets Move on and many more.   • It might be a bit of a drive (or short plane flight) but the Tunduro International Festival for the Arts is taking place in Maputo this weekend. Running from 27 to 29 August, one of the main focuses of the festival is to strengthen the infrastructure in the creative sector in Mozambique, thus benefit both the country as well as local artists.
