Molefe endorsed as SABC head of news

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board has announced the appointment of Phil Molefe as group executive for news and current affairs, the public broadcaster’s website said on Tuesday.

According to the report, this came after some board members, led by deputy chairperson Feleng Sekha, had opposed Molefe’s appointment for several months.

The appointment follows a meeting on Monday night between the board and SABC chairperson Ben Ngubane.

The report quoted Sekha as saying Molefe was appointed after the broadcaster followed all required processes, which showed he was the best candidate for the job.

“The board of directors of the SABC is pleased to confirm the appointment of Mr Phil Molefe as group executive of news and current affairs,” Sekha said

“The board is pleased that the process for the appointment has been finalised and expresses confidence on him and his team.”

Molefe has worked as the general manager of international affairs at the SABC and previously headed up the SABC Africa television news service.

Earlier this year, he was elected vice-chairperson of the Commonwealth Broadcasters’ Association. — Sapa
