France bounce back as Portugal slump in Euro qualifiers

France recovered from their home defeat to Belarus on Tuesday by earning a 2-0 win at Bosnia-Herzegovina in Euro 2012 qualifiers, but Portugal went down 1-0 in Norway and there were shock home losses for Russia and the Czech Republic

Meanwhile Italy, England, Germany and The Netherlands recorded victories to make it maximum points from two games.

Other teams with second straight wins were Turkey, Sweden, Slovakia, Montenegro, Ireland and Norway.

Laurent Blanc’s France, beaten 1-0 at home by Belarus on Friday, picked up their first points in Group D with a 2-0 win at Bosnia-Herzegovina thanks to goals from Karim Benzema in the 72nd minute and Florent Malouda seven minutes later.

Belarus, meanwhile, were held to a goalless draw by Romania while Albania defeated Luxembourg 1-0 in the group.

Portugal, after being held to a 4-4 draw by visiting Cyprus, went down 1-0 at Norway in Group H, Erik Huseklepp scoring the 21st-minute winner. In the same group, a stoppage-time winner from Thomas Kahlenberg enabled Denmark to defeat Iceland 1-0.

Miroslav Stoch was the match-winner in the 27th minute for Slovakia against Russia in Moscow. Slovakia have a maximum six points from two games in Group B, along with Ireland, who defeated Andorra 3-1.

Lithuania upset the Czech Republic 1-0 in a Group I game, Darvydas Sernas heading a 26th-minute winner in Olomouc, where Zydrunas Karcemarskas also saved a penalty from Milan Baros.

Scotland, meanwhile, needed an injury-time goal from Stephen McManus to overcome minnows Liechtenstein 2-1. European champions Spain, favourites to win the group, were not in Euro 2012 qualifying action.

Germany breezed to a 6-1 win over Azerbaijan, with Miroslav Klose helping himself to two goals, in Group A, while Turkey also made it two wins out of two with a 3-2 defeat of Belgium.

Austria began their campaign in the group by downing Kazakhstan 2-0 with two stoppage-time goals from Roland Linz and substitute Erwin Hoffer.

England chalked up their second successive victory with a 3-1 in Switzerland thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Adam Johnson and Darren Bent in Group G.

After beating Wales, Montenegro earned their second victory in the group with a 1-0 win at Bulgaria thanks to a first-half goal from Elsad Zverotic.

Beaten World Cup finalists The Netherlands collected a second victory with a 2-1 defeat of Finland in Group E. New Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar headed the opener in the seventh minute and made it two from the penalty spot nine minutes later before Mikael Forsell replied two minutes later.

In the same group, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice as Sweden swept San Marino aside 6-0 despite having Olof Mellberg sent off in the 34th minute, while Hungary edged Moldova 2-1.

Italy swept to a 5-0 win over Faroe Islands in Group C where Serbia and Slovenia finished 1-1.

In Group F, Latvia earned a 2-0 win at Malta, while both Croatia and Greece, and Georgia and Israel finished goalless. — Sapa-dpa
