The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) and Parliament agreed on Tuesday to have hearings on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) heard publicly.
This was announced in a joint statement by Sanef and Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications.
“In terms of the agreement, the committee will in due course schedule an open meeting with the SABC board to discuss the functionality of the board, the appointment of the group executive: news and current affairs, and the corporation’s turnaround strategy,” read the statement.
“In turn, Sanef has undertaken not to proceed further with its application at the Western Cape High Court, where it obtained an interim order on August 24 2010 prohibiting the committee from meeting behind closed doors with the SABC board.”
Sanef had sought the interdict when Parliament attempted to have the hearing behind closed doors. Before they received the interdict, embattled SABC chairperson Ben Ngubane had already given testimony to the committee. — Sapa
