Durban art picks: October 8 2010

Two of South Africa’s most exciting artists currently working in the medium of paint unveil
new bodies of work at Durban’s top contemporary art gallery this week.

The exhibition entitled Andhra Pradesh by acclaimed Pretoria-based artist Makiwa Mutomba is inspired by his recent cultural exchange visit to Hyderabad, a city in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Mutomba’s exhibition consists of over 50 of his signature miniature paintings in his striking pallette-knife style. On Earth As It Is In Heaven is the epic exhibition by iconoclastic artist
Conrad Botes in which, as the title implies, he undergoes some momentous metaphysical
wranglings. Though his imagery is resolutely rooted in our time and place, Botes gets to grips
with the big biblical themes of sin, retribution, guilt and redemption through the media of stained
glass panels and large-format reverse-glass paintings. This body of work Botes recently drew
much praise at the Sydney Biennale and this is the first occasion upon which the full set is seen
    in South Africa.

KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, opening Tuesday October 12, 6pm. Exhibition closes October 31. Tel: 031 277 1705 Email [email protected] Visit www.kznsagallery.co.za

  • The Newborns is the title of an exciting group exhibition of work by the B. Tech students of
the Photography Department of the Durban University of Technology’s class of 2010. As part
of their final-year studies, senior students are required to showcase their work not only as part
of their academic curriculum but also to the photography industry and the public at large. The
exhibition features selected work from all students and demonstrates a wide variety of innovative
techniques both in terms of capturing of the image and printing.
