The municipal manager and five other senior staffers of the uMhlathuze Municipality, incorporating Richards Bay and Empangeni, will not take home bonuses this year.
“The city of uMhlathuze’s most senior managers have collectively decided not to take contractual bonuses for the financial year 2009/10,” acting municipal manager Nkosinathi Nhleko said on Friday.
The decision was due to the effect of the economic crisis on the municipality.
“In spite of this (recession), the councillors and officials have worked tirelessly to ensure that the city continues to meet the core mandate of service delivery,” he said.
The municipality had showed its strength by changing its spending patterns to accommodate the difficult conditions in which it found itself.
Nhleko was unable to reveal the amount of money the municipality would save by not awarding the bonuses. – Sapa.
