Cope Fires Absentee General Secretary

The Congress of the People’s (Cope) national committee met on Friday and decided it would stop paying its general secretary, Charlotte Lobe, because she had failed to do her job, the party said.

“Ms Lobe has not been attending to her duties for the last four months,” said Cope spokesperson Phillip Dexter.

“The meeting resolved to discontinue paying her salary and reaffirmed the appointment of Ms Deidre Carter as acting general secretary until the elective congress.”

Cope has been riven with divisions, fought both within the party structures and courts, between party leader Mosiuoa Lekota and his deputy Mbhazima Shilowa.

Lekota and Dexter were removed from office in May in an effort led by Shilowa and Lobe. A court later overturned their removal and restored them to office. – Sapa
