A man is expected appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court, north of Pretoria, on Tuesday on charges of murder and attempted murder after a hand grenade was thrown at a group of worshippers blocking a road.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said on Monday that the 25-year-old man had also been charged with possession of explosives and discharging explosives in a public place.
The Pretoria News reported that the man, driving a Volkswagen Golf, allegedly lobbed the grenade into a group of Zion Christian Church worshippers who had blocked a road in Soshanguve as they headed home from all night prayers, at about 4am on Sunday.
According to the report the man had initially been warned by the congregants to slow down, before they unblocked the road to let him pass.
He allegedly returned 10 minutes later and threw the grenade.
Mangena said that a man, identified as Ephraim Mashishi (38), was killed while seven others were injured.
Two of these were still in hospital on Monday morning. — Sapa
