A 15-year-old girl gave birth to conjoined twins at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, the Star newspaper reported on Thursday.
The paper reported that the babies, joined at the chest and abdomen, were born on Monday and were currently in the hospital’s high-care neonatal ward.
Hospital CEO Johanna More said the case was referred to them from Klerksdorp because of the mother’s age.
Gauteng’s minister for health and social development Ntombi Mekgwe is expected to hold a press conference on Friday, where doctors involved in the case will explain the condition of the children.
Only about five sets of conjoined twins are living around the world at any time.
Only one birth in every 2,5-million results in conjoined twins and most of these children die within the first 24 hours. — Sapa
