Second suspect arrested for honeymoon murder case

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the hijacking and murder of a tourist in Gugulethu over the weekend, News24 reported on Thursday.

National police commissioner General Bheki Cele made this announcement to reporters in Gugulethu in the Western Cape, saying one or two more arrests could follow.

Tourist Anni Dewani was shot dead after being hijacked in Gugulethu on Saturday night. Her husband, Shrien, was released unharmed.

Cele commended the police for their swift response.

“Prevention would have been better, of course,” he said.

Cele said initial post-mortem results did not indicate that Dewani was sexually assaulted before being killed.

“We need to put in extra care to make South Africa safe,” Cele said.

The first man arrested in connection with the crime, Xolile Mngeni, 26, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning. His case was postponed to allow him time to get legal representation.

The magistrate informed Mngeni that he was being charged with murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. — Sapa
