The South African Football Supporters’ Association (Safsa) welcomed the $100-million World Cup Legacy Trust, launched by football governing body Fifa, on Tuesday.
“In our view, the trust will pave way for a tailor-made football development programme with specific focus on education,” Safsa spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga said in a statement.
“We have no doubt that the trust will manifest itself as a true catalyst in South Africa’s football development, currently in a state of distress,” he said.
He said Safsa would soon be submitting an application for operational and developmental funding from the trust.
The trust, launched on Monday at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, was a joint initiative by Fifa, the government and the South African Football Association (Safa).
Fifa president Sepp Blatter said a part of the trust would also fund education and health.
President Jacob Zuma said the trust would enable the country to invest in the youth through education. — Sapa
