A woman who witnessed an accident that killed four pupils testified on Friday that she could not recognise her neighbour’s child, who was allegedly hit by musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye’s car on the day of the accident.
“The kids’ [bodies] looked so scary as they were bleeding. I just couldn’t look at them, ” Selina Dasheka, who was walking on the road when the accident happened, said.
“He grew up in front of me, but I didn’t recognise him as I was crying.”
Dasheka gave the Protea Magistrate’s Court a detailed recollection of what happened on the day of the accident on March 8.
Her neighbour, the mother of Mlungisi Cwayi, one of the children who died, had come to her to ask for information about the accident.
“Mlungisi’s mother came to my house and asked me what the children who were killed in the accident were wearing,” the court heard.
‘She started crying’
Dasheka said the mother started crying when she told her that the children were wearing red school jerseys.
“She started crying and she punched me so hard that I could not catch my breath and then stormed out of my house.”
On March 9 the mother confirmed Cwayi’s death in the accident at the local police station.
Dasheka accompanied her to the police station when Cwayi had not come home.
Dasheka was the fourth witness to take the stand at the celebrity’s trial.
Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala are on trial following an accident that killed four teenagers in Soweto. They were allegedly racing Mini Coopers at the time.
Andile Mtombeni (19), Phomelelo Masemelo (16), Cwayi and Prince Mahube, both aged 17, were killed as they were walking home from school.
Fumani Mushanana (17) and Frank Mlabo (18) suffered serious injuries, including brain damage. — Sapa
