Northern Cape police were at a farm near the Karoo town of Sutherland where a French couple — that shot dead a police officer and wounded another — was believed to have been killed on Thursday.
Lieutenant Colonel Hendrik Swart said the couple had yet to be identified, but confirmed that a man and woman were dead.
“They were shot in a house on the farm, and certified dead. Several firearms and numerous amounts of ammunition were also found.”
The bodies were still in the house as police investigated.
The couple, believed to have been members of the US-based Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment, had lived in a house on the farm for 12 years.
Swart said the shooting took place at another house — about 1km away from their previous dwelling. They had apparently barricaded themselves inside the property.
Philippe Meniére (60) and Agnes Jardel (55) had evaded police since Friday, after shooting dead student Constable Jacob Boleme (27) and wounding Warrant Officer Glenwall du Toit (42).
Hardie farm owner Gerhardus du Plessis tried to evict them from his property when he found a number of unlicensed firearms in their possession. Four police officers arrived at the property with a warrant to search for the weapons last Friday.
According to media reports Meniére shot Boleme at point blank range, and Jardel wounded Du Toit in the back.
Swart told the South African Press Association that police found the two after a helicopter was sent out late on Wednesday night to observe movement on the farm.
“We then received a call from the farm owner, who spotted movement at the house.”
He said police believed the couple had been at the house for about two days, and had prior to that been hiding in the nearby veld.
“We are still investigating the shooting. All the necessary members are on scene doing their jobs,” Swart said.
