Distinctly Durban all-girl jazz/fusion band Heels Over Head continue the upward trend of their burgeoning career with a typically upbeat live show this week.
Winners of last year’s Yamaha Young Talent Award and with their recently-released debut Could It Be racking up popular and critical acclaim, 2011 might easily be the year for this funky foursome to blow up. Renowned for their scintillating stage presence, energy and passion, the band has found its groove and create a smooth, watertight brand of contemporary jazz. Thulile Zama and Nomkhosi Mazibuko on vocals are joined by Lindelwe Ngonelo on keyboards and piano and Zoe Masuku to create the breezy jazz-pop that has become their signature sound. As smooth and silky as their music is, it is not to be filed under easy listening as the trained ear will detect the subtle influences of maskandi, mbhaqanga, gospel, classical, funk, house, reggae and afro-pop.
