Business Unity South Africa (Busa) on Wednesday welcomed the suspension of tariffs gazetted for the tolling of Gauteng highways.
“We welcome the opportunity to further engage on this [tolling system],” said Busa spokesperson Masego Lehihi.
“Busa is already consulting with its members to investigate ways that will lead to constructive consultation that will not exacerbate unemployment, or worsen the quality of life of poorer South Africans.”
The original announcement of the fees — where it was reported motorists could pay up to 66c per kilometre to use tolled roads — prompted a public outcry.
The African National Congress and its ally, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, also voiced concern.
Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele on Tuesday announced that the tariffs were suspended until further notice.
A team would now review the charges.
