Lots to do and see on the fringe

As part of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s commitment to the sustainable development of the music and arts industry, there are festival workshops that take place at various venues throughout the central business district and greater Cape Town area.

Reviving the drumbeat
The doyenne of South African jazz scribes, Gwen Ansell, facilitates this unique arts journalism workshop. Participants from all media cover a curriculum aligned to the national standard in specialist music journalism. Trainees from India and various African countries enjoy intensely practical, mentored work based on the run-up to the festival and receive an attendance certificate. Seeing the sound
Peter McKenzie facilitates the intensive week of instruction, mentoring, critique and exposure to the work of some of South Africa’s top jazz
photographers.

Gigs for kids
An interactive workshop introducing kids from two to 10 to the magical world of music and sound. Invitations are extended to charities, social development forums and various pre- and primary schools.

Youth rocks jazz
A series of skills development workshops for music students and events production candidates who learn to plan for and coordinate events leading up to a concert. Saxophonist Donveno Prins facilitates the music training sessions; reputable industry personnel facilitate the technical course. Added attractions include opportunities to interact with Berklee School of Music officials.

Berklee auditions

Top representatives from the world-renowned
Boston music school conduct auditions and interviews. Two full tuition scholarships for their summer performance Programme, three online course scholarships and numerous partial undergraduate courses are up for grabs. Conversations 2011: A Trans-Continental Jazz Event
Young South African jazz musicians and their counterparts at New York’s Juilliard School collaborate through a live internet link between Cape Town and New York in a live demonstration event using low-cost, commonly available
technologies.
CTICC, Auditorium 2, March 24, 5pm to 6.30pm.

Master classes
Guest facilitators include Berklee alumni performing at the festival such as Danilo Perez, Esperanza Spalding and Christian Scott.Auditorium, Robben Island Gateway, March 25, 9am to 4pm.

Music biz workshop

Monetising the Music: Mobility in Changing Markets is the title of Graeme Gilfillan’s informative talk at the Auditorium, Robben Island Gateway, March 25, 11am to 11.30am.

Music Skills and Development Workshops for Youth
Participants from schools in local are taught the basics of jazz, as well as enhancing skills levels and opportunities for aspirant performers. Trainers include a team from Berklee as well as participating CTIJF musicians.
