Crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli cannot be trusted because he used his influence and various police connections to cover up crimes he was involved in, the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court heard on Tuesday.
State prosecutor Kholeka Gcaleka said investigator Kobus Roelofse had painted a picture that Mdluli was a jealous man who resorted to extreme measures to cover his tracks, including the theft of police dockets and threats against the investigating team.
Mdluli had misused state resources and had instructed his colleagues to get rid of evidence, Gcaleka said.
Investigator Roelofse testified that Mdluli was directly linked to the 1999 murder of Oupa Ramogibe and crimes of kidnapping and assault.
Stolen dockets
The court heard that related dockets were stolen and later found in Mdluli’s locker.
Mdluli, Lieutenant Colonel Mtunzi-Omhle Mthembeni Mtunzi (52), court orderly Samuel Dlomo (49) and Colonel Nkosana Sebastian Ximba (38) stand accused of killing Ramogibe.
They are charged with intimidation, three counts of kidnapping, two counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder.
Gcaleka said the four accused had not met all the bail criteria and that Mtunzi was lying that he had handed his passport in.
The case was adjourned until after lunch while the four accused were deciding whether they wanted to file replying affidavits. — Sapa
