Gauteng music picks: April 15 2011

Ooh., I am in Cape Town this week and I feel very far away from home.

I especially feel far away from Kitcheners because it looks like a weekend of total full-on dancefloor action in that indiest of Jo’burg indie dens (except for those techno parties). High Five Records are rocking party number three with the full on afro-good times vibes on Friday 15 April (line up: Baggy Dog, Sassquatch, Maude And The Lonely Polony, Plaat Japie and Blk Jks Soundsystem) and Blush n’ Bass are hitting it with Moe Joe, Data Takashi, Warren and Two Prong on Saturday 16 April. My crystal ball says sore soles, and sweaty shirts. Alright!

I also feel super far away from my boys Rambling Bones & His Bloody Agents who are playing a free show at Love & Revolution on Friday 15 April. I won’t feel far away from the other den of Indieniquity on Thursday 21 April when Cape Town’s Pretty Blue Guns (who are mates with my mate Love) play the weekly Howl at Wolves because by then I will be back home.

But beyond all this missing and not missing the important thing to remember is that this week is opposites week. Woo hoo! Opposites week! Your latest chance to do things that you really don’t ever do. You can go check out Tidal Waves, Wrestlerish and Fulka at Arcade Empire on Friday 15 April (this is an opposite because Arcade Empire is lank new so you’ve probably never been there before); you can go check out Valiant Swart and Ollie Viljoen at Cafe Barcelona on Sunday 17 April (this is an opposite because you never check out Afrikaans music); or you can head down to the Pretoria State Theatre on Thursday 21 April and smash you head around with Warthane, Agro and All Forlorn (who are opposites because they are metal, and metal is just opposite).

Plus! All these shows are actually in Pretoria and everyone knows that no one in Jo’burg ever actually goes there (and that no one in Pretoria actually ever reads the Mail & Guardian) – so if you can make it to our nation’s capital you can be assured of a double opposites win-win whammy.
