Curried Celluloid returns to The Bioscope on Fox Street on May 31 with Dev D.
The free movie screening, complete with biryani served at The Chalkboard Café, right next door, will feature a talk by Hina Saiyada, an independent filmmaker from India.
The film is is a modern day Generation X remake of a famous book by a leading Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chatterjee (written in 1917), Devdas. The original story is about the scion of an old elite landed family who returns from a ‘modern” education and struggles to find himself in a world that seems unchanging. His steady slide into alcoholism and the breakup of his arranged marriage form the core of the original narrative.
This film adds a much stronger sexual undercurrent, which is quite rare for Hindi and Indian cinema in general. It won a number of awards in India.
