New Zealand MP expelled for wearing rugby jersey

A New Zealand lawmaker has been ejected from the nation’s Parliament for wearing the jersey of her favourite Super 15 rugby team.

Opposition MP Clare Curran was ordered to leave the chamber on Tuesday by Speaker Lockwood Smith who objected to her wearing the blue and gold colours of the Otago Highlanders. Curran was wearing the jersey to protest the decision of the Otago Highlanders’ board to change the team’s uniform.

Smith said the jersey did not meet parliamentary dress standards, which state that female MPs must wear “normal business attire”.

Curran said her ejection from the chamber was “an over-reaction”. – Sapa-AP
