Malema Does It His Way At League Conference

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema’s national executive committee (NEC) was elected unopposed on Saturday at the league’s conference at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

Malema and his top officials were re-elected on Friday night. His contender, Gauteng youth league chairperson Lebogang Maile, declined nomination. The new NEC consists only of Malema’s supporters in the league.

Not a man to mince words, ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu outlines the league’s programme of action to achieve economic freedom.

Maile will however sit on the NEC as an ex-officio member by virtue of being the league’s provincial chairperson in Gauteng.

Half of the 35 NEC members served on the previous executive committee.

“We retained most of the former NEC members to ensure continuity,” said deputy secretary general Kenetswe Mosenogi.

Mosenogi is the only women in the top leadership of the youth league.

New secretary general Sindiso Magaqa told the media on Saturday that the new leadership would focus its attention on strengthening the organisation’s branches to ensure the resolutions taken at the conference were implemented effectively.

Former deputy president Andile Lungisa — who did not run for any of the top positions — told the Mail & Guardian that he now wanted to focus his energy on running the National Youth Development Agency, which he chairs. He said he would also be running for the presidency of the Pan-African Youth Union, an organ of the African Union.

The conference ends on Sunday with an address by Malema and ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe.
