Jo’burg art picks: July 1 2011

An exciting project brings audiences into the city.

? Invisible Cities is a year-long music and arts festival, which takes the form of 12 one-off monthly events set in the empty buildings earmarked to become part of Johannesburg’s Maboneng arts precinct. These take place in ‘transitional spaces”, on rooftops, in hallways and in stairwells. Invisible Cities has attracted crowds of up to 400 and this weekend’s second event will feature performances by local acts Dirty Paraffin and the Make Overs. In collaboration with the Skeleton Crew, a multidisciplinary artists’ collective, they will build installations and environments and transform spaces. The Skeleton Crew are João Orecchia, Koos Groenewald, Jana Hamman, Mpumi Mcata and Liam Lynch.

Main Change, corner of Main and Kruger streets, Maboneng precinct, on July 3 from 2pm to 9pm. Signage and directions from Arts on Main and Main Street Life, Fox Street. More at www.invisiblecities.info.
