Jo’burg theatre picks: July 15 2011

Eve Ensler’s latest piece premieres in Jo’burg this weekend, and young dancers are given a chance to share their talents.

? Best-selling Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler and director Jo Bonney present I am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World, a series of vignettes inspired by women across the globe. Composed of a series of fictional monologues and stories, the drama addresses issues such as female genital mutilation, teen pregnancy, eating disorders and relationships. It makes use of personal stories to weave individual narratives into a colourful tapestry of what it means to be a woman in the world today.

The Market Theatre Laboratory, 56 Margaret Mcingana Street, Newtown, Jo’burg. From July 15 to 27. Prices range from R66 to R140, depending on the day of the week. Book at Computicket.

In a celebration of the progression of ballet through the ages, Mzansi Productions is collaborating with the Roodepoort Youth Ballet Company to allow young dancers the opportunity to dance alongside professional ballerinas. The dancers have joined forces, exercising both youthful vibrancy and awe-inspiring ability, to create an original and exciting ­production of the beloved dance classic, Cinderella.
