Instrumental virtuosity shares the stage with MOR rock this week.

Just Jinjer remain a popular drawcard despite never having regained the stellar success of their debut album All Comes Round and its huge hit single Stand in Your Way, which saw the band play arena-sized shows opening for Counting Crows. Having recently opened in London for INXS (also seeking a return to former glory since the death of its charismatic lead singer, Michael Hutchence, in 1997), Just Jinjer will perform two shows in Durban this week. The band are currently in preproduction for their new album and at these performances will deliver the old favourites that put them on the map both locally and abroad and showcase some of the new songs they have been working on.

? The Lungisa Indlela Village will receive a R25?000 cheque from First National Bank at the annual FNB Starlight Pop Opera Concert presented by the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. The popular fundraiser is one of the highlights of the KZN cultural calendar and sees the orchestra team up with a host of popular and classical musicians to present a glamorous concert featuring top-flight music and state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The diverse programme includes Turandot’s Nessun Dorma sung by the Cape Flats Tenors, Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas sung by Juanita Kruger, A Million Lights by John Ellis and Kiss from a Rose by Joseph Clark. Saxophone ace Shannon Mowday will perform two pieces with a South African flavour.

? Classical guitar impresario Nir Hermelin brings his acclaimed show, Nylon String Stories, to Durban for the first time this week for a single performance. Hermelin, a finalist of the Cape Town 2011 Classical Guitar Competition, will present a kaleidoscope of pieces that will include Spanish, classical, jazz, African and bossa nova. Hermelin’s signature playing style is a result of his wide range of influences, which include Sting, Jamiroquai, Bach, Queen, deep house and vocal/guitar jazz legends Tuck & Patti.
