Jo’burg theatre picks: August 5 2011

See the country’s top satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys dressed up in all his finery in Still Desperate First Ladies, a look at the power behind the thrones of the land.

?’We have no shortage of First Ladies occupying the various presidential residences at the moment, but there’s only one First Lady of free speech, and that’s Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout,” says Uys. The return season of Still Desperate First Ladies includes guest appearances by prominent South African women in celebration of Women’s Month.

? The East Rand theatre development project Sibikwa presents the Sibikwa Poetry Festival on Saturday. The day-long event is part of the project’s larger Seriti sa Basadi (Dignity of Women) Festival 2011. Among the poets will be Ameera Patel, Ntsiki ‘MaMiya” Mazwai (aka StreetQueen), Zimbabwean-born Linda Gabriel, Natalia Molebatsi and Phillippa Yaa de Villiers.
