The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) will roll out mass action throughout the country for free education, youth unemployment and “economic freedom in our lifetime”.
In a statement late on Thursday, the league called for marches in all provinces to strategic sectors of the economy, particularly the JSE, the Chamber of Mines and the Union Buildings.
“The ANCYL will mobilise all young people, unemployed youth, and informal settlement dwellers to fight against economic oppression. The details of these mass protests will be unveiled on the birthday of the ANCYL on September 12 2011.”
The decision on mass action was taken at the league’s national working committee’s (NWC) regular meeting on Thursday.
“The NWC remains unshaken on its programme of economic freedom in our lifetime and will continue to lobby for the nationalisation of mines and for expropriation without compensation. The ANCYL will in the next two weeks hold bilateral meetings with fraternal organisations to develop a common programme on economic freedom in our life time,” the league added.
It said it was “inspired” that most structures of the ANC at provincial, regional and branch level agreed with it on the nationalisation of mines and expropriation without compensation.
“The ANCYL members must never be demoralised or defocused by threats that are circulating in the media, they must remain vigilant, focused and on the ground. The struggle for economic freedom will never be diverted by anybody.”
The league added that it was holding report back sessions over the weekend in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. — I-Net Bridge
