Police National Commissioner General Bheki has asked crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli to tell him why he should not be fired, according to a report on Sunday.
The Sunday Independent reported that it was in possession of a confidential letter by Cele, dated August 20, in which he gave Mdluli seven days to explain why he should remain a member of the police service.
Cele reportedly said in the letter that it was undesirable for Mdluli to be employed by the South African Police Service.
Allegations haunt Mdluli
“For a divisional commissioner of crime intelligence to remain under the employment of the service while he has the most serious allegations hanging over him is untenable and works against the interests of the service,” Cele said.
Mdluli is facing murder, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, intimidation and assault, and defeating the ends of justice charges in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
The charges are connected to a crime that was allegedly committed between 1998 and 1999. Mdluli and three others are accused of killing Oupa Ramogibe in 1999.
Ramogibe, who married Mdluli’s ex-lover, was allegedly told to leave her or he would be killed. He had opened an attempted murder case before his death.
At the time, Mdluli was the station commissioner at the Vosloorus police station in Boksburg, on the East Rand.
He is currently out on R20 000 bail.
National police spokesperson colonel Vish Naidoo told the newspaper that he was not aware of the letter. – Sapa
