Cape literary pick: September 2 2011

In the past 50 years alternative and independent publications have played an important role in transforming South Africa’s political, social and cultural landscape. From the politically charged organs of the apartheid era through to the literary magazines, zines and comics of the 1990s and beyond, they have challenged the prevailing social discourse.

The Independent Publishing Project highlights the role of self- or small-scale publishing in South Africa. Facilitated by Jonah Sack and Francis Burgeris, it is both an interactive exhibition of collected works and a working studio aimed at producing new collaborative publications. Expect to encounter books, booklets, zines, takeaways, pamphlets and leaflets that reveal publishing to be both a medium and a strategy.

Blank Projects, 113-115 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. Opens on September 8 and runs until September 29.
