The Mail & Guardian Critical Thinking Forum invites you to join us for a debate on the preservation of our heritage versus economic development.
According to the Constitution of South Africa, heritage is a national and provisional mandate.
However, the heritage sector is fighting an on-going battle to protect our finite and fragile heritage resources against property development and environmentally destructive economic activities. On the other hand, the country is among the lowest to record a growing gross domestic product (GDP) and the level of unemployment is high.
Economic developers feel obliged to contribute to the plight of the country to make it a better place for all, even if it may compromise heritage preservation in some instances.
The purpose of the debate is to give voice to all the parties involved and to give our audience of critical thinkers a better understanding, as we take a closer look at the crucial debate between the preservation of our heritage and economic development.
The M&G would like to extend an invitation to join us on September 20 in Johannesburg at the FNB Conference Centre. It will be moderated by Xolani Gwala from SAfm.
