Training workshop improves drinking IQ

Brandhouse in August 2011 launched the South African DrinkIQ training workshop to media and sports personalities. This was a precursor to the public roll-out, which will allow the public to participate in encouraging internationally acclaimed sports stars to raise their understanding of drinking .

DrinkIQ was developed by Brandhouse shareholder Diageo, to make a significant and sustainable impact on creating a more positive role for alcohol in society. The DrinkiQ workshop was originally developed to train Diageo’s 23 000 employees in 180 markets worldwide, both as ambassadors for responsible drinking and as individuals equipped to make sensible decisions on alcohol consumption.

Designed with an understanding of how adults like to learn, the sessions are fun and stimulating, involving discussion and information sharing.

Topics covered include:
* What role does alcohol play in society?
* What are some of the different factors that influence our drinking?
* What are the short and long term effects of alcohol?
* What is meant by a ‘standard drink’?
* What can we do to drink responsibly?

A key feature of the DrinkiQ website is the Responsibility Channel, an online community where stakeholders can post and share videos and relevant programmes which are known to be effective in addressing alcohol-related issues.

DrinkiQ has received numerous awards, including the International Academy of Visual Arts Communicator award for outstanding website in the health and wellness category, as well as being the runner up in the education category.
