Durban businessman arrested for alleged bribery

A Durban businessman has been arrested for involvement in an attempt to bribe Hawks KwaZulu-Natal head Johan Booysen with R2-million, the unit’s spokesperson said.

He was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday after returning from Zambia, spokesperson McIntosh Polela in a statement.

The arrest comes after a police officer dropped a suitcase containing over R1,3-million into Booysen’s car, said Polela.

Colonel Navin Madhoe was arrested for the crime last week. A further R700 000 was expected to be paid later, according to media reports.

“The bribe attempt was to obtain a sensitive document central to a corruption investigation,” said Polela.

The Sunday Tribune named the businessman as Thoshan Panday, who is also being investigated for involvement in a R60-million police travel scam.

Panday is expected to appear in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Monday facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. – Sapa
