Space congress to bring astronauts into SA’s orbit

An upcoming international astronautical congress in Cape Town marks the world’s commitment to space projects in Africa, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) said on Wednesday.

The event, to be held from October 3 to October 7, would be the first in Africa in the congress’ 62-year history.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to meet some of the stars of space exploration and show them what South Africans are doing,” said Peter Martinez, who chairs the SAAO’s local organising committee.

Over 2000 delegates were expected to attend.

They would include the world’s space agency heads and senior executives of global aerospace companies, scientists, astronauts, industry researchers and space lawyers. — Sapa
