Final Few To Bear Witness As Malema Hearing Resumes

Julius Malema’s disciplinary hearing was set to resume on Wednesday morning, where final witnesses are expected to testify in its sixth sitting.

African National Congress spokesperson Keith Khoza said on Tuesday the youth league leader’s hearing was expected to start at 9am at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

He “had no idea” who the final witnesses were.

There had been speculation that ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Tony Yengeni would testify in favour of Malema.

“There has been speculation but no confirmation,” Khoza said.

Human settlements minister and ANC NEC member Tokyo Sexwale reportedly testified in Malema’s defence at his last hearing on October 15. Malema’s hearing had been postponed to that day from October 6, after he was admitted to hospital with flu symptoms in Polokwane earlier this month.

He faces charges of bringing the ANC into disrepute and sowing division within party ranks. He recently said the ANC Youth League would send a team to Botswana to consolidate local opposition parties and help bring about regime change.

Charged with him are ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer general Pule Mabe, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa and deputy secretary general Kenetswe Mosenogi.

Closing arguments were scheduled for November 3. — Sapa
