Jo’burg ballet pick: October 26 2011

Johannesburg-based ballet company Mzansi Productions has taken up residence in Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre for a two-part season of contemporary dance with a classical feel.

The production will feature three young Cuban male dancers who are staying in South Africa for a few weeks after the company’s run of Don Quixote. This year marks the 65th birthday of the late, great Freddie Mercury. In tribute, the company presents Somebody to Love: A Dance Celebration to the music of Queen. The second part of the season is titled Celebration 2 and includes Binary Code, a new work by young choreographer Lindsay McDonald, and Kitty Phetla’s Carmina Burana, set to Carl Orff’s iconic musical composition.

Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre. Somebody To Love runs until November 1 and Celebration 2 runs from November 2 to 4. Book at Computicket.
