President Jacob Zuma has appointed Michael Hulley as his legal adviser with immediate effect, the presidency said on Wednesday.
Hulley, who will perform this role on a part-time basis, has rendered legal services to the president in the past.
Hulley represented Zuma during his legal woes over the years.
He represented Zuma when he faced charges of bribery and corruption in relation to the controversial arms deal.
“The presidency welcomes the opportunity to engage his services in this broader capacity,” it said in a statement.
Hulley is now the second legal adviser to the president.
He will work with Advocate Bonisiwe Makhene, who was seconded to the presidency from the Department of Justice and Constitutional development in 2009.
Hulley expressed his gratitude at the opportunity to serve Zuma at this level.
“I am humbled by the appointment and look forward to making a meaningful contribution in support of the president and the presidency,” he said. — Sapa
