SA nursing council workers to strike

Workers at the South African Nursing Council (SANC) went on strike on Wednesday, demanding a 10.5% pay rise.

A group of about 50 workers staged a protest outside the SANC’s offices in Leyds street. There was a small police presence. An officer at the scene said the protest was peaceful.

National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) SANC Pretoria chairperson Mabhelandile Bibi said about 120 employees were striking.

He said SANC had offered a 7% salary increase.

SANC registrar Tendani Mabuda said that as far as he knew, Nehawu was demanding an 8.75% raise, and not 10%.

“This has been a long dispute and it has widespread effects. We were recently at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, but could not resolve the issues,” said Mabuda. — Sapa
